Teatro Bulabanda

We make theater to reflect. Reflect to help Curaçao learn to bear its own responsibility. The biggest obstacle to this development lies within ourselves. That theater can reflect to understand life and thus reach a real community. A community where theater can create dialogue between different groups of people and generations.

Vision

Teatro Bulabanda wants, through theater to take the necessary steps to reach a conscious, critical and emancipated Curaçao, which holds its future firmly in its hands.

Mission

Teatro Bulabanda wants, through a critical and poetic theater of high artistic level, to make its audience aware and thus take steps to transform the community of Curaçao.

The name Bulabanda

Bulabanda is the name of a Congolese ritual, in which a formerly enslaved person in Africa, could choose to change owners by jumping sideways. Here in Curaçao the tradition has become a more definitive way to end slavery by flying back to Africa, perhaps figuratively in death. Bulabanda means self-liberation: do not put responsibility for your life in the hands of others.
